April was National Poetry Month
This writing contest was
THE AMERICA LIBRARY OF POETRY
NATIONAL STUDENT POETRY CONTEST
Poetry - the best words in the best order, expressed in rhythm or meter and maybe rhyme. It is different from prose, which is sentences built into paragraphs and pages and chapters into books like ECHO.
We've created couplets with two rhyming lines and quatrains, with four rhyming lines and structured cinquains We also made diamante poems - shaped like a diamond - comparing and contrasting the characters in our story. Our alphabet poems were fun and listlike.
Next was haiku, a traditional Japanese form. They usually have nature themes. Haiku has 5 letters and so do the first and last lines of a haiku poem. The middle line has seven.
Haiku by Sakura
The willow tree swayed
The water rippled in the breeze
and the tiny droplets glistened...
Underneath the covers,
to the drawers,
through the house,
to the bathroom,
for my backpack,
down my yard,
to the car,
in the car,
to the school,
into the school,
across the school,
to my classroom.
The Doors of Life
When one door closes another opens
A door that leads to happiness
A door that has a clear brook running between a grassy bank
A door that the sun shines down onto
Showing the antique scratches on the oak
Animals running, chirping, swimming, flying
Until the rusty copper key is inserted into the lock
Closing that door forever
Until another one is opened
The dark of night
To the light of day
The moon is bright
I mustn't stay
The flowers blooming on the ground
Hear the howl of the blood hound
Seasons changing all the time
I wish I could just press rewind
To watch the green trees bloom
To play in the snow
And drink hot chocolate right at noon
To watch the leaves fall on the ground
And then replay it all year round
The moments we share,
The things we do,
to me and you.
The laughter we have,
Each day we live.
Learning to love,
learning to forgive.
Live life to the fullest,
Follow your dreams.
Cause though they may sound hard,
It might be easier than it seems.

What Am I? Haiku
I carry my house,
when afraid I hide in it
slower than slow goes.
Snow falling all around
landing softly on the ground.
hisses, jumps, runs.
scared, warm, away, sleepy
Journey to School
Out of bed,
Into the shower,
Toward the laundry pile,
In the car
Beyond the house,
Up to the bus stop,
On the bus,
At the school,
Across the gym,
In Mrs. Miller's class.
Life is a special thing,
It’s something that can’t be bought with money or shiny rings.
Life can also be burden,
Some day’s we feel aren’t worth it but something in us keeps hopin’.
We can’t remember all things,
Some of which we wish we could remember, but when others are brought up we feel a sting.
The sting hurts worse than any pain any pain or torture,
When it’s time we feel the need to move on we just feel the need for a little more time.
Although the sting hurts the wish feels as though the happiest happiest thought
It feels as though floating on a cloud or .

We tried Diamante Poems - diamonds of description - made of nouns, and adjectives describing them, and -ing verbs.
Watch for the change halfway through from one subject to another.
The Evans kids did nice work!
